The Azure Bluet is an easy Bluet to identify in the field using close-focusing binoculars. In comparison to the Skimming Bluet, it is slightly larger (not noticeable unless both are flying together), but the blue on the tail end of the abdomen is also on 1/3 to 1/2 of the 7th segment. The females of this species are also distinctive, with a black abdomen above except for segments 7 and 8, which have blue markings like those shown on the last two photos. Azure Bluets were seen in Waushara, Marquette, and Dane Counties in 2003.
