Aaron Carlson
Location: Red Cedar State Trail, Menomonie
Hiked from the trailhead in Menomonie, about 1 mile south and back. 5:45-7pm. Sunny and warm weather conditions, although this stretch of the trail was very shady at this time of the day. Sightings were nearly identical to my hike on the trail about 2 miles south of here 2 days ago. I also observed one unidentified orange-ish butterfly that repeatedly harassed a giant swallowtail, but I could never get a decent look at it. I was thinking some kind of fritillary, or possibly a comma. |

We have had an abundance of butterflies this week, most notably Monarchs and Tiger Swallowtails. Today we made a trip into Manitowoc County to the Shores of Lake Michigan just north of Cleveland to do our annual Monarch caterpillar retrieval. We captured 9 caterpillars all within the 3rd to 4th instar, and one in it's 2nd instar. My 6 year old daughter also located a Monarch who had just started to prepare the chrysalis stage. My daughter had a blast this afternoon and can't stop checking on the Monarch's in their newly constructed "home". As they mutate into butterflies, we will be releasing them once ready. We are hoping to make another trip in the next few days to capture more young'uns so we can help ensure that they make it to their adult stage to be reintroduced into the wild. |

Observations made in my garden and nearby clover field reported also on Aug. 16. An example of predation of the Common Buckeye was also found on Queen Anne's Lace. |

Besides finding birds on my birdwalk this morning I observed a few butterflies and other insects. First I found a lovely cone-headed Katydid (perhaps a Neoconocephalus ensiger). Then a beautiful black and white moth (identified later as a Catocala relicta) alighted on my friend and then flew off to a tree where I got a good photo of it. One of the black female Tiger Swallowtails was laying eggs but too high up in a tree for me to photograph. |

Of course I stepped outside without my camera and saw something fly out of the corner of my eye. I looked down and resting on the brick wall of our home was a beautiful Mourning Cloak and overhead flew a Monarch! I ran to get the camera and they were gone. Hoping to see them again today, and get a picture! |

87º Cloudy and Humid. 10-Noon. Had 1 Monarch hatch out in the house before I got up. Went looking for giants. May have seen more than 2. Found 1 male ET Swallowtail on the trail with a bad forewing. A female was circling above him.
