I was working in my gardens when I saw this amazing butterfly and had to get pictures. It was enjoying the purple coneflowers. When I walked by another patch of coneflowers, there was another one. I could tell they were different butterflies because the first one I spotted was missing one of its tails.

Aaron Carlson

Location: Red Cedar State Trail, Menomonie

Hiked from the trailhead in Menomonie, about 1 mile south and back. 5:45-7pm. Sunny and warm weather conditions, although this stretch of the trail was very shady at this time of the day. Sightings were nearly identical to my hike on the trail about 2 miles south of here 2 days ago. I also observed one unidentified orange-ish butterfly that repeatedly harassed a giant swallowtail, but I could never get a decent look at it. I was thinking some kind of fritillary, or possibly a comma.

We have had an abundance of butterflies this week, most notably Monarchs and Tiger Swallowtails. Today we made a trip into Manitowoc County to the Shores of Lake Michigan just north of Cleveland to do our annual Monarch caterpillar retrieval. We captured 9 caterpillars all within the 3rd to 4th instar, and one in it's 2nd instar. My 6 year old daughter also located a Monarch who had just started to prepare the chrysalis stage. My daughter had a blast this afternoon and can't stop checking on the Monarch's in their newly constructed "home". As they mutate into butterflies, we will be releasing them once ready. We are hoping to make another trip in the next few days to capture more young'uns so we can help ensure that they make it to their adult stage to be reintroduced into the wild.

I spotted the Eastern Yellow Swallowtails, the Black Swallowtails, and the Great Spangled Fritillary today. The Viceroy and Monarch were seen earlier in the week in the same place nectaring on clover, Queen Anne's Lace, Thistles and Eupatorium. The Question Mark was seen a week ago resting on some rocks in my small garden pond near the house, and the Giant Swallowtail was seen nectaring on Phlox and Monarda in my flower garden. They were all spotted between noon and 6PM on hot, sunny days.

Butterflies all over still. Too busy to count them all but I stop to note what is still out and about my yard. Varied landscape. Pond, two woodlots, cultivated flowers, wildflowers, 3 acres of lawn and trees. (at least)

Of course I stepped outside without my camera and saw something fly out of the corner of my eye. I looked down and resting on the brick wall of our home was a beautiful Mourning Cloak and overhead flew a Monarch! I ran to get the camera and they were gone. Hoping to see them again today, and get a picture!

Red clover field with disturbed areas. Tiger Swallowtails remain unusually common, while Monarchs are surprisingly absent. My garden also yielded some overlapping species found in the nearby clover field.

The Monarch caterpillar is by my front entrance, I feel so fortunate to have them back again.
