Pipevine greeted me when I entered the garden. Saw 3 at one time near the bridge. Many places in the garden. As I was opening the door for an elderly lady who was leaving another PS swooped us. One sat still long enough for an excellant look. Most would flutter within inches of my face. Most picts were blurry. Was amazed that there were so few species there. |

Jim Ebner
Location: nature hill preserve Oconomowoc
Butterflies scarce, almost absent. Discovered more than 50 half grown larva of Red Admiral wandering on a foot trail. Apparently they had exhausted their food source as evidenced by the nettles which were decimated. Some had traveled 50 yards from the nettle patch, and apparently are doomed to starvation. No adults observed. Also one White-striped Black Moth. |

Most of these sightings were on Blackhawk Dr. about a mile south of the developed part of the Adams Co. Park, yet still within the park boundaries. Blackhawk Dr. runs east/west for about a mile and ends at the lake where there is a crude boat landing. It is a dirt road which runs through rich woodland, and cat-tail swamp, and is a wonderful place to observe butterflies and dragonflies.

A very good butterfly day while I was catching adult purple martins for banding. I witnessed an adult female bring a Buckeye to feed her nestlings. The nestling was only 4 days old, but it easily devoured it in about 5 seconds. That was hard to watch since I'm a butterfly enthusiast, but I'm a purple martin enthusiast as well. I also saw my first Aphrodite Fritillary in years, and I saw an American Snout for the second time in my life. |

Hot and Dry! Milkweed is wilting! 5:30-6 PM This Painted Lady caught my attention as it was acting territorial. The larger than normal size and coloration had me wondering. Not far away another "new" PL was chasing off foes. Doreen got to see a "monarch going into chrysalis" for the first time when we came in from our walk. |

This site was a CCC camp up until 1942. I found a field full of lupine--but the domesticated kind, not the short plants. Then I found blues on the lupine--but they were greenish. Also found my first little yellow of the day way up here. Pleasant surprise on a day that started with a thunderstorm and seemed like marginal for butterfly activity. European skippers were insane in numbers! Hundreds took flight with every step I took. Counted more than 50 in one square foot of blackberry. |

Ran into other folks here, including the very helpful and knowledgeable Scott Swengel. If not for them, I might have spent a lot more time wandering around in cattails. Seriously, be smart and careful if you come here. I did not see any Poweshiek skippers though Scott did in the earlier morning. I'm pretty sure the satyr is an Eyed Brown but I haven't seen an Appalachian yet so don't know for sure. Scott saw an Appalachian out there. |

This was our 24th annual Mud Lake NABA butterfly count. We found 33 species which is better than usual. Conditions were seriously dry but there was a good amount of common milkweed in bloom which attracted many butterflies. Second best nectar source was clover. Broad-winged Skipper was new to this count. Record high number of Orange Sulphurs and Common Buckeye. Monarchs were present in good numbers. |

Conditions generally unfavorable.. hot and dry.(11 a.m. to noon) Milkweed patches unproductive. Sighting of Dainty Sulfur (last seen in 2009) a pleasant note in an otherwise less than optimistic scenario. Got within two feet of it before it took off in a whirl-a-way with an Orange Sulfur. |
I didn't believe at first because I didn't think they flew this far north. It had the iridescent blue and the white dots on the bottom hindwing and there were no stripes to indicate a black form female of the Tiger Swallowtail.
