Butterfly sightings for April 2013

On the first warm and sunny spring-like day, my first butterfly of the year!

Saw Mourning Cloak flitting around in search of food.

Spotted a single Comma. It was very skittish and disappeared before I could get a picture or positive ID. It should be reported as Comma sp.

53 degrees F and sunny, calm conditions. my first for 2013

Some sunshine and in the mid forties, I was thrilled to have two Mourning Cloaks flutter during my walk in the park.

My 1st Wisconsin butterfly in 182 days! Also saw an Infant Moth at Avoca Wildlife Area

A Cabbage White was flying about in the yard this afternoon.

Every year, same corner where the yard meets the woods. This guy must be about 12 years old now.

2 Mourning cloaks were seen, they flew away before I could get a photo.

46° Sunny. Spent a lot of time flying back and forth in the sunshine.

Doing some yard work mulching yard debris when a Mourning Cloak landed right by my mower. First butterfly of the year. Was able to get a picture, but the butterfly keep moving and finally flew off toward the bluffs.

A ragged old warrior, one of two seen along the gravel road. No pasqueflowers in bloom yet, btw.

48 and 50 degrees, sunny, 8" average snow depth

1st Common Green Darner!

Despite warm weather (64) and a long hike, only the one sighting.

Only our 3rd day over 50 degrees all year. 40-50" snow has fallen this month. Still water mostly frozen and woodlands still with 1-2 feet of snow. But that didn't stop these two from venturing out of their overwintering sites in my garage.

Sun, windy, and low 70's. Mourning Cloak flew through my backyard headed west into town.

Found in a wooded area along east side of the park.

Also saw tiger beetles, weird ground bees, and a really cool white-striped grasshopper.

52-54 degrees F, sunny, 10-15" snow depth. 40 of the Comptons were on Stage and Mountain Roads SE of Corni. At least 12 other Comptons were on roads between there and the tip of the Chequamegon Peninsula.

Finally--my first butterfly of the year! I also saw a pair of Common Green Darners flying in tandem.

First butterfly sighting of the year. ..typical non stop nervous, restless flight behavior. No nectar sources yet.
