There was some wind on and off, so the butterflies seemed to want to stay low in the prairie. Some Six-spotted Tiger Beetles were seen on wooden boardwalks and in the rock garden. I also saw a sulphur butterfly (probably a clouded sulphur), but I was too far from it to identify it (30 ft min distance). |

We found 45 Phlox Moths too, a high number for them. Their behavior and the Downy Phlox phenology suggested that Phlox Moths were still pre-peak on this date. Gorgone Checkerspot and Dusted Skipper numbers were above average. |

I'm seeing very few butterflies since I am daily slogging though the flooded woods where I am doing my breeding bird survey. There are lots of summer Spring Azures, and some Mourning Cloaks. Even the many Dragonflies can't eat the terrible numbers of ravenous mosquitoes. Had a funny moment when I spotted a pair of bucks so perfectly in line, they appeared to have 2 heads. |

I finally made it to the real Rush Creek goat prairies. For years I've been visiting the SNA, thinking this little meadow with the white boarded up building and outhouse couldn't be it. I had time so I followed the two-track the rest of the way to the "goat" prairie which has a spectacular view of the river and bluffs. No one has ever mentioned a spectacular view at Rush Creek. So where would the Ottoes be hanging out? Goat prairie or meadow? |

11 counters, counting for 22 hours. 26 species is the lowest number in the 23 years of the count! Only 276 individuals, less 150 Cabbage Whites, is just 126 individuals that are not an introduced pest species! That is also the lowest number of individuals in at least 23 years. Factors might be last year's drought, this spring's cold weather and/or 2013 being the rainiest year on record (so far). Take your pick. Monarch's were lowest since the cold rainy year of 1993. Eyed Brown and Clouded Sulphurs were lowest in 23 years. |
