Eau Claire proper had a steady rain yesterday, just over an inch fell up here on Mt. Simon......today the Milkweed plants literally shot up about a foot from under the ground, the Milkweeds were not visible, not out of the ground and I had wondered whether they would be coming up.....but the soaking rain brought them up and out for all to see........on cue then about 10:00 a.m. a Monarch Butterfly shows up all happy and sassy, flitting here and there between plants and the whole neighborhood....we were finally able to get some pictures....one on the Milkweed which is their favorite and another just being here and happy!!!! makes two of us, glad he made the trip and hope many more start to show up now....... sighted on May 28th 2014 about 10:00 am... |

Best sightings were several Baltimore Checkerspots, Bronze Copper, Banded Hairstreak and Hackberry Emperor. An Emperor landed on one of the participants. We saw a Wandering Glider overhead, which is the world's champion migrant (12,000 miles over ocean between India and South Africa). Thanks to Stan Rehm for spotting butterflies and for the Copper photo. And thanks to Jan Axelson for information about the prairie and Cherokee Marsh. Leader Karl Legler rescued a Baltimore trapped in a web. When released it flew up and touched his nose then flew off. Was it a "butterfly kiss" thanking the leader? [insert spooky music here]. The Hairstreaks were in the Sumac trees near the parking lot. Just tons of them, very windy day, so it was difficult to get a good picture. Also saw a Tiger Swallowtail and a Fritillary, not sure what kind either of them were. |

An E Comma kept bothering me while I was working on my deer stand so I took that as an sign and put down my hammer and grabbed the camera instead. The stand can wait. Also checked the south Marsh Rd. on the way home. Here were 2 G-s Frits, 2 N Cresents, 1 Least Skipper and the other E Comma. |

Lots of butterfly activity in the yard today! The GSF was newly emerged. Monarchs were mating and a red admiral was depositing more eggs on stinging nettle. 2 of the 3 monarch eggs I found yesterday hatched today. |
