As usual the Common Wood-Nymphs stay low but persistence can pay off like this one. I had one land on my hand yesterday but a little close for the 100-400 mm. lens I use. |

Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association
Location: 15 mile diameter circle includes Mud Lake, Audubon properties, Rocky Run, Schoenenberg Marsh, etc.
This is our annual Mud Lake NABA butterfly count. This was the 26th year! The butterflies were very good, a surprise considering the bitter cold winter and the cold spring. The Audubon properties were covered by Mark Martin and Audubon Society counters. The rest of the circle was done by Peter Fissel, Jim Otto and the Leglers. We found 39 species and 1,059 butterflies. That is the 3rd highest number of species in the 26 years of this count. |

The sun finally came out this afternoon, so I decided to do some pre-NABA count scouting. I was hoping to find Bog Coppers at my best spot for them, and I did. I was very surprised to find a Two-spotted Skipper, this is the first one I've ever seen outside of Sandhill. |

Afternoon 3-6:15 Pm, Mixed Clouds & Sun, soft breeze. One hundred seventy-nine sightings, of twenty three different butterfly species, and also two day moths. There were hundreds of hairstreaks, too many to count just in the first mile of rural road, but I photographed "42" individuals, yielding, I think, three hair streak species. In one half hour stretch 5-5:30 pm I saw more Baltimore Checkerspots "16", then I have ever seen in my whole life! Day moths: in late afternoon 8 Ctenucha & a Spearmarked Black. |

We have about an acre yard and have several species of milkweed throughout the yard. My neighbors mow any plants which pop up in their yards, so I pull the plants, check for eggs, and raise any I find. We raised about 20 last year however only 2 so far this year. I saw a Monarch yesterday visiting a wild milkweed and laying eggs. The butterfly in my picture we just raised and set free. |

Two large patches of Swamp Milkweed, plus several scattered plants have been a butterfly bonanza bringing in lots of hairstreaks, and large patches of Vervain have brought in a lot of Silver-Spotted Skippers. My biggest surprise, and a first for this location was a uncooperative Little Yellow in during the morning trip, but patience was rewarded with a decent ID photo. |

If they manage to find our one plant there must be many coming into the state. So anyone with Aristolachia should keep an eye on it! |

1:20 - 3:00 pm, 72-76 degrees F, 60% sunshine, wind west 10-20 mph. Just Scott surveying the bog, but landowners (of the bog and prairie) Shelley and David Hamel joined me in some of the searching in the prairie. I greatly appreciate Hamels letting me visit their great habitats. Shelley has seen a Bog Copper here before, so today's findings confirm their persistence but does not establish a new site record. The Bog Coppers were on the bog, but everything else was in prairie/barrens. It is unusual to find Leadplant Moth within 1/4 mile of a Bog Copper! In much searching Ann and I had only seen about 15 Leadplant Moths in the previous 5 years, so this is a significant sighting. |

2:49 am to 4:39 pm, 57-65 degrees F, 80% sunshine, wind north 3-10 mph. We also surveyed one bog roadside. These bogs are the wettest we've ever seen them. The Port Wing SNA West unit bog had the rare combination of Bog Copper and Dorcas Copper overlapping the same day with a Bog Fritillary and 3 Brown Elfins. This is one day later than our latest previous Brown Elfin sighting, on 11 July 2013 on the same bog as today. |

5:20 to 6:34 pm, 67-71 degrees F, 10% sunshine, no wind. We only spent 27 and 3/4 minutes on the bogs. The rest was walking and driving in between. One bog averaged 3000 Bog Coppers/hr to break its own record of 1340/hr, the previous high we have seen anywhere. The other bog averaged 1000 Bog Coppers/hr, making it the 4th highest we've seen. |

75° 100% Cloud cover, humid, sprinkles in the afternoon. 16 people. 24 species of butterflies. Some lifers for many of the participants. Dion was in an upper meadow 100+ yards away from the marsh/bog. The day before it was 150+ yards farther away up the slope from the marsh. I am hoping others will add their picts of the Striped Hairstreak and Mulberry Wing. We only covered about half the area I did on the 11th. |

Location: Eight Bogs near Amnicon Lake and Moose Junction
11:26 am to 3:04 pm, 65-76 degrees F, 80% sunshine, wind north 3-10 mph. This is probably our highest Dorcas Copper count in a day, probably edging our previous established on most of these same bogs by 10%. Today 95% of the Dorcas were on the bogs and 5% in ditches, while in our highest previous counts 75+% of the Dorcas Coppers were in ditches and <25% on the bogs. Probably every site had our highest ever Dorcas count on the bog (excluding ditches), out of >25 tries at most of these bogs in Dorcas flight. |

Location: 3 kettlehole bogs near Drummond
8:20 to 9:52 am, 60-66 degrees F, 100% sunshine, wind variable 3-6 mph. Wishbone Lake had 412 Bog Coppers at a rate of >1000/hr, our 3rd highest rate ever. Roger and Crane Lake bogs, which were flooded this spring, had only 3 and 0 Bog Coppers, a poor showing for them. Our first Dorcas Coppers in about 25 tries during their flight on these bogs--all on Wishbone. These sites are described in Jeff Nekola's fall 1998 article in American Butterflies “Bog-Trotting for Butterflies in Northern Wisconsin”, and also in Ann Swengel's online article on Northwestern Wisconsin Bog butterflying on the SWBA website. |

Today all of the Dorcas Coppers were along the roadside near the bog (2 were on the bog July 13). All 30 Bog Coppers today were well out on the bog. 30 is a high number for our Bog Copper counts here. |

We saw 2 female and 32 male Regal Fritillaries; this is our highest regal Fritillary Count at Buena this year, which makes this a very low year for Regals there. This is our 3rd highest Gray Copper count this year. The male Purplish Copper was about 600 meters west and 300 meters south of the Griffith Ave./130th Road junction. This was in an area with a series of small flower-field depressions, approximately 100 meters south of the prairie-chicken blind (but possibly a little east or a little west, too--I wasn't paying attention to that at the time) still in the grassland here. |

Six Purplish Coppers were in the 40 acre plot immediately southwest of the County W/Archer Road junction. Five of them were in a small area 280-350 meters west and 50-80 meters south of this junction. One was 150 meters west and 50 meters south of this junction. The 7th Purplish Copper was just northwest of the Apache Road/Cty W junction, just northeast of where the culvert emerges west of Cty W. The Red Admiral count is an estimate: about 500 on Apache Road and 100 while we walked or on the other mile of road. |
