Far SW corner near woodlot at W end of the trail: at least 35 (at least 20 on 1 clump of milkweed) we could identify along the trail but with binoculars we could see at least 50 other small hairstreak type butterflies; all on butterfly milkweed. There were easily over 1 hundred clumps of the milkweed scattered over the prairie but the butterflies were all within about 20 meters of the woodlot edge. |

This was the 25th year for the Sandhill/Seneca count. Acadian Hairstreak, Great Spangled Fritillary, Northern Crescent, Mourning Cloak, Eyed Brown and Monarch have been seen on each of the 25 counts. Thank you to everyone that helped this year. 34 species and 669 individuals were seen. We came across a large spider with her back covered in babies. She looked more like a bumpy toad when she moved. |
|

Scott and Ann Swengel
Location: Buena Vista Grassland
We walked about 11 miles in the grassland to survey 17 separate plots. We found Regal Fritillaries in 12 of the plots and Gray Coppers in 9. All of the Purplish Coppers were in the two northernmost patches of Buena Vista WA along Elm Road that are diagonal to one another east and west of the road. Three tries in a row we have found Purplish Copper in the NE corner of the southwestern patch of these two (a Wisconsin Society for Ornithology tract), in all cases northeast of the pond there. |

Valhalla, 5 at East Roger Lake, 1 at Crane Lake). The Dorcas Coppers were at East Wishbone and West Wishbone. |

Jul 5 2015 |
Scott and Ann Swengel
Location: Eight Bogs near Amnicon Lake and Moose Junction
Same bogs as on June 21. We found at least 6 Dorcas Coppers on every bog, except just 1 at Moose Junction West. Except for roadsides next to Bear Lake Bog, the rate of Dorcas Copper finding was at least twice as high out on the bog as on roadsides next to it. We found Dorcas Coppers along the roadsides of North Bear Lake Bog (1 east side, 5 west side) and Bear Lake Bog (6 west, 4 east), but not at the roadsides of three other bogs. The Baltimores were in the roadsides of North Bear Lake (E side) and Bear Lake (west side). There is a glaring paucity of large fritillaries in northern Wisconsin. |

The former Badger Army Ammunition site is an excellent location for butterfly-watching. Today's Dorcas count is twice or more as high as our previous roadside high count here. |

Mostly cloudy, near 80 degrees F. Same sites as on July 19. We saw one Dorcas Copper on every bog but Lost Creek, including our first one in about 15 years on the main Bark Bay Bog. 25 to 20 years ago bark Bay Bog was one of our semi-regular sites for seeing Dorcas Coppers, and we hope that resumes. I traveled along Buckley Ave., Autumn Rd., and visited Scott Flowage. The roadsides had been mowed recently. I also saw two crescents and one hairstreak that I was unable to identify to species. |

4.25 hours. We walked 4 1/2 miles in the grassland to survey 7 plots. Six of the plots had Purplish Coppers. On the north side of Archer Drive we saw 30 Purplish Coppers in the first 1/4 mile west of County W and 28 Purplish Coppers in the 2nd 1/4 mile west of County W (27 of the 28 in this plot were along the east and north edges of our square route). We saw 14 Purplish Coppers in the plot immediately northwest of the County W/Apache Road junction. |

40 minutes. The barrens was so dry that 7 of the 10 Karners were in the sedge meadow by the lake with the Purplish Coppers, often flying among plants in standing water. On all 3 visits here last year and this year we have seen 8-12 Purplish Coppers. |

These were the first 9 of 17 Monarchs that eclosed on our screen porch today and flew away. We have about 60-80 more as cats or in a chrysalis. And it's not over; yesterday my wife found 41 fresh Monarch eggs on the milkweed in our garden. If you plant it, they will come... |

While taking a walk this morning at 7:30 I saw a Banded Hairstreak sitting on the sidewalk and realized that I had never seen one doing that before. 15 minutes later I saw another! I guess I better get out for a walk early in the morning more often. |

Still windy! |
Early afternoon. Started out sunny then became overcast. There was one orange lily that we saw blooming in the prairie (just one lonely lily) and lo and behold, there was a coral hairstreak on it.
