After a doctor's appointment, I stopped by the large field next to the clinc which had goldenrod and a few other types of plants. Some were flying around the parking lot and some ventured across the street to Menards. Also saw an interesting moth. |

Amy Chamberlin
Location: Moely Prairie
The day before I noted these sightings, I found many sulphurs and Cabbage Whites nectaring on white aster in the prairie. There were too many to count and I didn't get close enough to determine the specific species. The photo I'm submitting today was taken the next day and was the only specimen on the flowers although I saw a few others flitting about from afar. |
|
Sep 13 2018 |
Stan Rehm
Location: Fitchburg residence
Five Monarchs eclosed this morning; just a few more left in chrysalises. We're finally nearing the end of an incredibly productive year. The Black Swallowtail cats are starting to form Js (above the head of the big one in the pic is the remnant of a prior year's chrysalis because we reuse their favorite sticks). |

I was just passing through and saw a couple of butterflies trying to fly in the heavy winds by the control structure at Kylingstad Flowage so I stopped and managed to get a couple of photos. What's interesting is that I had only seen 1 Least Skipper this year prior to today. |

Location: Woodman area
The butterfly sightings were all incidental while I was doing bird bath videos. I was finally able to get the bird species that has been taunting me with their songs all spring and summer, the Yellow Billed Cuckoo. It took an interesting bath by smashing its large body into the water and then standing back up. The day before I was lucky to watch a Woodcock take a nice long bath that lasted ten minutes. They also take an interesting bath by washing one side of their head at a time. I guess when you have that long of a beak you need to be creative. |

Sunny, slight breeze, 67° F. Highs in the 80s all last week and throughout the county. This was an incidental sighting while I was gardening, so I only managed one poor photo with my phone. But the Cloudless Sulphur was unmistakable: huge, greenish-yellow, with very few small markings (a male?). It hung around the phlox for a while, then took off. Lucky me! |

Just a quick visit to Olbrich Gardens this morning, as it was such a hot and humid day. My husband and I had counted around 15 Monarchs on various flowers throughout the gardens, when we came upon a tree covered with white flowers. We stood in amazement watching dozens of Monarchs flying from flower to flower on the tree, sipping nectar. After counting about 30 Monarchs we had to give up, as there were just too many to count. Definitely the most monarchs we have ever seen in one place. How fun! |

Mike Reese
Location: Mariners Trail, Two Rivers/Manitowoc
I had my best Monarch day of the year. I was surprised because I thought Migration was nearly over here. I had a very conservative count of 335, most of which were nectaring on New England Asters. I say conservative because I didn't want to disturb them and only counted the ones I could see nectaring or those that passed by me heading south. In the fall, I always start from the south and work my way north. After I finished looking at the major nectar sources I stood in one spot and counted the Monarchs that migrated between me and Lake Michigan. In 10 minutes I counted 26 Monarchs (4:11pm start) that flew by. |

Location: Lake Menomin Park
All before 12:30pm. Barely 50 degrees. This field with Butterflyweed was mowed a few weeks ago, causing it to rebloom now. |
Very foggy but some sun peaking through occasionally. Windy off the lake with the temps in the upper 60s.
