Butterfly sightings for July 2019

Location: Fitchburg residential butterfly garden
Dane County

This is going to be quite a week for Monarchs for us. Last week we had 6 eclose and fly away. By midday today 11 more had eclosed, some of whom are still hardening their wings. And we have about 45 more waiting in their chrysalises; they will probably eclose by the end of this week. But no new eggs in the garden for days now. Hopefully the next generation will get started ovipositing soon.

Mud Lake NABA Butterfly Count

Location: Rocky Run, Mud Lake, Schoenenberg Marsh
Columbia County

Conducted by Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association. This was the 31st annual Mud Lake count. 5 people counted within a 15-mile diameter circle for a total of 12.5 hours. We began with light rain but unexpectedly the sky cleared up and became sunny! Temperature up to 85 degrees. 396 individuals of 28 species were found. Numbers were about average but species were below average. Individuals were inflated by a few species with unusually high count: American Lady was highest of last 25 years; Red Admiral was 3rd highest in 31 years; Least Skipper and Pearl/Northern Crescent were the highest in 31 years. Finally, we re-found on this count, the Karner Blue originally found and reported by Lester Doyle! (Count information from Goose Pond will be added in when we receive it.) Thanks to all the counters! Bronze Copper and N Crescent photos by Jim Otto. Rest by Karl Legler.

32 species and 285 individuals. This is very close to my lowest numbers for all 29 years for this count. The Common Ringlets that I saw yesterday were absent today, but the Checkered White sighting made up for it. Hairstreaks and Skippers had very low numbers, but all individuals were fresh and they may be just at the beginning of their flights. The swans are Trumpeters, and they paid little attention to me.

Madison NABA Butterfly Count

Location: Within a 15 mile diameter circle centered on Madison
Dane County

Conducted by Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association using binoculars. 8 counters counted for 21.2 party-hours and found 509 butterflies of 34 species. Monarchs were highest ever presumably because of plentiful milkweed. Scarce species found were Gray Hairstreak and the very rare stray, the Reakirt's Blue. Photo of Hickory and Reakirts below by Karl Legler, Reakirt's above and Gray Hairstreak by Pat Ready. The other two photos by Edgar Spalding.
Thanks to all the counters for an outstanding count!

I first thought they were only going to nectar sources but after developing a search image was finding quite a few more on the fine leaved sedges (Carex oligosperma or Carex lasiocarpa?). Saw appx. 20 individuals in about 20-30 mins. of looking. Both males and females present - did not identify sex in field but by photos later.

Surveyed the rest of our Regal Fritillary long-term monitoring sites (20-23 years per site) here, and a few other patches. Today's butterflies were all counted more than a mile away from any place we counted yesterday. The Regal count for the long-term plots is probably a little above the long-term median. The Gray Copper totals are probably below average for 2006-2019, but far above the 1997-2005 average. This is probably our 2nd highest Aphrodite Fritillary total anywhere in one day -- highest count of more than 2,500 was here in July 2018. More than 98% of the Regal Fritillaries we've seen at Buena Vista this year were males.

Our 23rd annual butterfly census at Northern Kettle Moraine! 7 counters observing with binoculars and camera for 6.8 hours. We found 208 individuals of 32 species. The species density was 9% higher than 22 year average, while density of individuals was 40% below average. So biodiversity was OK but population of butterflies was down overall this year. (But Monarch had 2nd highest density of the 22 years. Thanks to all the counters!

I wandered around on a two hour walk through town today and found a surprising number of butterflies. I found some in the park, and a cemetery, but mostly they were in people's gardens, and one school yard where Milkweed had been planted. The one Monarch was drinking water from a rumble-filled vacant lot. The rather battered Buckeye was the first I've seen this year. A Carolina Grasshopper almost fooled me into thinking he was a Mourning Cloak.

Fritillaries and hairstreaks were under a powerline ROW just west of E. River Road, north side of Co. Rd. O. Sedge skippers were mostly on common milkweed at north edge of Co. Rd. O at a sedge meadow. Karners, Coral HS, B. selene were along north third of Stolte Rd. More Dun/Broken Dash skippers at that milkweed than I could bother counting. Very nice out.

What an incredible area for butterflies! I have photos of all of them, I just don't have the time to go through them right now. I do have a photo of all 5 Duskywings and will label them as such.

2pm, sunny. Monarchs were preferring zinnias today. The Silver-spotted Skippers were mating when I arrived, but decoupled before I could shoot.

Ruth Smith & I spent an hour walking the prairie and marsh area then up towards the woods. Mosquitoes were bad in the shade and biting flies were awful in some grass areas. Ruth took the Pearl Crescent pic. I took the award winning Cabbage White!

4:30-5:30, Sunny and calm. The Little Yellow was a different one from a couple of days ago. That one was a whiter female, while this one was very yellow.
