This was my first visit here. The blue sky that I was hoping for went away before I got there and I only saw a Cabbage White on the way up the hill. There were lots of nectar sources, especially puccoon, but there is Columbine for duskywings, and Red Cedar for Juniper Hairstreaks, as well as rock cress for Olympia Marbles so I think all of them should be there. I am looking forward to checking this out again soon.

Temperature in mid-afternoon was only in the mid-fifties, and it was fairly windy. One had to find south-facing, protected areas to find butterflies. Painted Lady was just to the east of James Rd/Klots Rd junction, with one or two more. Saw several coyote scats, but there were no butterflies on them. Briefly saw one small dark skipper, possibly either a Sleepy or Dreamy Dusky Wing, but ID is very uncertain. Saw no elfins, nor any of the overwintering guys.

Nine sites north of Moose Junction along Hwy 35 (2), west of Hwy 35 on Foxboro-Chaffee Road, on Milchesky Road 1.15 and 1.9 miles west of County Hwy A, 3 sites along County Hwy A south of Amnicon Lake--North Bear, Bear, and Bear SW, and Lyman Lake Bog. Most of these bogs are described in "The Fascinating Butterflies of Northwestern Wisconsin Bogs", posted at the Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association website www.naba.org/chapters/nabawba/watching.html
These are high Freija Fritillary numbers but low Brown Elfin numbers. 50 of the Freijas and 4 Red-disked Alpines were at Milchesky Road "1.75" (about a 0.7 mile survey route), which we now access by walking south from a landing 1.9 miles west of County Hwy A. 26 of the Freijas and 3 Red-disked Alpines were at Bear Creek bog (not north or SW) in a 1/2 mile survey. 33 of the Freijas, plus the only Jutta Arctic, were along a 1.25 mile rout we walked on Lyman Lake Bog.

Cloudy, 63-70 degrees F. Nine bogs 13-16 miles east of Fifield, most of them described in "Butterflies to Log in and near Northern Wisconsin's Bogs" that is posted at Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association’s website www.naba.org/chapters/nabawba/watching.html
Bogs surveyed were along Forest Road 137 1.1-1.2 (W side), 1.4-1.5 (E side), 1.9 (E), and 2.3 (E side, SW side) miles south of Highway 70; south of Forest Road 136 less than a mile west of Forest Road 505; Forest Road 505 1.7 (E side)and 5.4 (E) miles south of Highway 70, and Highway 70 0.5 miles east of Forest Road 137 (S side). The Freija Fritillary count is low but possibly this was late in the flight. Brown Elfins were very low, indicating that they are at the bottom of their approx. 4-year abundance cycle on Wisconsin bogs.

First spot was to east of Larson Rd, 0.1 mi south of North Boundary Rd. Several flighty Erynnis were seen, and a single Common Roadside Skipper photographed. Then on the south-facing slope to the south of Crex Ridge Road, I focused on a "blue" with my Papilios. Strong blue above, with no markings or tail, and I just caught a glimpse of a row of orange spots near the margin of the under hindwing. Then it was off, with no chance of a photo. But I'm certain that it was a Karner. There was plenty of lupine about. Curry Road, that was so productive for Doug Buege five days ago, was dry and dead butterfly-wise. Despite perching on a columbine, I think I was seeing a Mottled Dusky Wing. Also saw a large Phidippus jumping spider.

Beautiful sunny morning with light winds to start. Very windy late morning and afternoon. I saw a lot of unidentified duskywings and blues that remain uncounted. Anything that got up in the wind disappeared quickly. Along the North side of North refuge rd between Larson rd. and Crex Ridge rd. and then along the South side of Crex Ridge rd. The wet part of Curry rd on the North end.

8+ hours surveying Phlox Moth, Frosted Elfin, and Karner Blue long-term monitoring sites and a few newer sites for those species. This is our 60th straight brood surveying some of the Karner sites. Most sites were within .5 miles of the Bauer Road-Brockway Road intersection, at Stanton Creek Road, Dodge Road/Highway 27/Jean Road Phlox sites, Dike 17, and a forested area 1.6-2.3 miles south-southeast of the Castle Mound Road /Brockway Road jct. We found about 10 Phlox Moths and they were probably in the first half of their flight period. We also saw 39 unidentified duskywings and an unidentified blue. The Karner Blues we saw were 7 females and 72 males. The Variegated Fritillary was at a Downy Phlox site along Dodge Road northwest of Millston. The Cobweb Skipper was 0.2 miles west of Brockway Road, 20-30 meters north of the east-west dirt track that's about 1/2 mile south of Bauer Road. Three of the Frosted Elfins were along the south side of Stanton Creek Road 0.1-0.8 miles east of Hunter Haven Road; 2 were in the narrow mowed ROW right by the road and one was 0.7 miles E of Hunter Haven Road in the northern part of the wide pipeline ROW that begins 8 meters south of the road. These Stanton Creek Road sites are discussed in Ann Swengel's “Update on Finding Frosted Elfins in Jackson County, Wisconsin” in the Butterfly Watching Site Guides project on the ResearchGate page https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Ann_Swengel/publications/

67-72 degrees F on all bogs. 100% sun for first 2 bogs, then 20% sun for the six Nicolet NF bogs. All of these butterflies were on the bogs. Two bogs elsewhere in Forest County and 6 Nicolet National Forest sites: Forest Road 2414 1 mile north of FR 2183, on west; four Forest Road 2182 bogs--just northwest of its junction with 2414, Forest Road 2182 midway between FR 2414 and 2176 (1.4 miles from each) on south side, east Wolf Lake, and North Wolf Lake (following foot trail 0.75 miles NNE to snowmobile trail that enters bog); and a Frigga Fritillary site on FR 2174 north of FR 2183. The 4 bogs along Forest Road 2182 are described in Ann Swengel's butterfly watching guide "Butterflies to log in and near Northern Wisconsin's Bogs" posted at the Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association website http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabawba/watching.html
Three of the 4 Freija Fritillaries and all of the Red-disked Alpines were on North Wolf Lake. The Frigga Fritillaries were on FR 2174, FR 2182 1.4 miles west of 2414, and another site. The Satyr Commas were at FRs 2182/2414 NW of jct. and 2182 1.4 miles west of 2414. We saw an unidentified Mustard or West Virginia White on FR 2174. In NE Wisconsin (but not north-central or NW, where even and odd year counts are relatively similar) Jutta Arctics in even numbered years are 1/10th as abundant as in odd years (no exceptions--we analyzed it), so we were happy with this many Juttas.

Surveyed the area south of the parking lot on West Bauer Road and a logging road found on the west side of South Brockway Road. Most of the Karners were found at the West Bauer area associated with the Sundail Lupine. Around 10-20 of the Karners were found at the South Brockway area, most of which were at puddles. We also found two Phlox Moths on the same plant together and two Northern Barrens Tiger Beetles along the path leading into the more forested area of the road.
