Spruce Lane,11:30 Am - 1:30 Pm, 75 degrees, gusty winds, scattered clouds: Many of the butterfies I flush today, get carried away by the gusty winds. For the fourth year I search for copper butterflies on this weekend. Dorcas Coppers, still camera doesn't show that a pair was courting, and in another moment the Dorcas takes on a Northern Crescent for a Fleabane flower and wins after three bouts! |

Wishbone NW has become a regular Dorcas Copper site (2 seen today) in the last 5-6 years, after almost a 30-year period before that when we saw no Dorcas Coppers there. |

Location: Eight Amnicon Lake and Moose Junction bogs
Same sites and roadside counts as we reported on June 14 and 23. The Bog Copper Counts are below median. On June 23 just 4/12 (33%) of our Dorcas Copper sightings here were on roadside units. Today 50/61, or 82%, were on roadside counts. This is a typical progression from early in the flight (coppers out on the bog more) to later in the flight (copper coming out to ditches or other roadsides more. But only 3% of the Bog Coppers seen today were on roadside counts; usually we see more Bog Coppers on roadside counts here than that during main flight. |

Location: Bayfield County Coastal bogs
Five sites: Port Wing Bibon Lake, Port Wing Boreal Forest West Unit, Bark Bay Slough and the bog south of the road at Bark Bay Slough, and Lost Creek Slough Bog. These are the slowest sites we survey so the Bog Coppers were in early main flight. Today at Port Wing Boreal Forest West was one of about 10 times, out of >1000 times surveying a site during the Bog Copper or Bog Fritillary flight, when we saw a Bog Fritillary the same day in the same bog as a Bog Copper (61 of them today on this bog). We saw at least 13 Bog Coppers on every site except for the bog south of the road at Bark Bay, which is a site where we have seen small numbers of Dorcas Coppers (but not today) in the few times we've tried it. |

The group at UW Arboretum's Grady Tract found 14 species, same as last year. (Sorry, Ben, my browser can not access your photos!) The photo of Hickory Hairstreak is by Ginny Nelson. High temperature was 92 and heat index got to 97. One counter suffered heat exhaustion and had to be taken back to the parking lot by ambulance. (Yes, butterflies can be dangerous!) |

Thanks to Dean Hanson's report of bog coppers I decided to check out this area and am very glad I did. I walked almost all the way out to the lake. Location: Within a 15-mile diameter circle centered at 2 miles east of Centerville.
This was the 32nd annual Trempealeau NABA Butterfly Count. Rather, it was barely 1/2 a count. Cool temperatures and heavy overcast did not allow any butterflying until 1:30 p.m. It was 67 degrees with about 25% sunshine. High temperature was 72 degrees. 2 people in 1 party observing with close-focusing binoculars for 3.5 party-hours. We found 25 species, less than the usual all-day count. I didn't carry my camera because of the dismal prospects. So, of course we didn't get a photo of our unexpected best find, a scarce stray, a cooperative Sleepy Orange! (We know it well from years of butterflying in Texas.) |

Finished the last 12 of our Regal Fritillary long-term monitoring units (21-25 year series one each), plus one non-monitoring unit. We averaged more than 200 Monarchs per mile of walking surveys. Although we counted more than half of our Monarchs by 12 Noon, we saw 58 out of the ca. 67 total mating pairs of Monarchs counted after 12 Noon. This is the 4th straight above average to very high Monarch year here, after 4 below-average years here (and elsewhere in WI) out of five during 2013-2017. |

100% cloudy and 42 minutes of us each counting a separate unit. Some of this area is sedge meadow. The Aphrodite Fritillary, Eyed Brown, and Baltimore counts are below average, but this could be due to no sunshine for all and for the Baltimore being largely between broods. The later phenology compared to our other counts here probably helped some of the wetland skipper counts be higher. |

Dorcas copper or bog copper? This small copper was not in a bog, but it was within 100 yards of a bog containing cranberry, and given the small number of black spots on the upper wing and the fairly lengthy orange line on the lower wing, I believe it is a bog copper. |

3.25 hours. Four sites adjacent to Wood County Hwy X, and one inside Sandhill Wildlife Area. The total count is at the highest end of the spectrum for these sites. We've surveyed 4 of the sites in 54-63 different broods each, and a newer site for about 34 broods. The total of 500 Karner Blues is how many we counted (496 of them at monitoring sites + 4 others), not an estimate. All of these butterflies were seen on transect walks except four Karner Blues and an Eastern Tailed-Blue seen at the gate when we exited the Sandhill Trumpeter Trail auto tour. 77.5% of the Karners for which we could tell the gender (N=484) were males. |

3.5 hours. One barrens surveyed for Karner Blues (approx. 49th brood counted out of the last 50 here), 2 sites mainly for Purplish and Bronze Coppers, and 5 sites mainly for Regal Fritillaries and Gray Coppers. The Karner Blue count is the highest we've gotten at this site in several years. We saw 12 male, 1 female, and 1 unknown gender Regal Fritillary. 99% of the Regals we've seen well enough to identify gender this year were males. |

After not seeing a tiger swallowtail for several weeks, I saw a large, crisp-looking individual nectaring in the Monarda; seems to be an eastern tiger swallowtail, whereas those I photographed in early summer were Canadian. 10% sun, 64-68 degrees F. Coastal bogs: Port Wing Boreal Forest West Unit, and Bibon Lake Bog, the two phenologicaly slowest bogs we study. A downpour of rain happened as soon as we finished, then a really big rain 1.5 days later. When we re-surveyed these two bogs in perfect weather July 25, our total was 46 Bog Coppers. The Bog Copper count July 23 was surprisingly high because all other other Bog Copper sites we visited in late July except one, and both other coastal bogs, had come way off their peaks already because the flight was far earlier than average. |

For 25+ years we've monitored Purplish Fritillaries at 4-7 bogs in this area, usually 2 times during the possible flight period. Most years this date would be early in the flight, or just before the flight. We've seen the species only at North Bear Lake and Bear Lake bogs in the last 6+ years. Also, our counts have declined drastically, with all of the lowest counts being in the last 7 years or so. Today we surveyed North Bear, Bear, Lyman Lake, and Milchesky Road 1.15 bogs, and the roadsides of each. We saw a fresh-looking Purplish Frit east of County A along the ditch, at Bear Lake Bog. |
