It’s been a strange year for Vanessa butterflies and Buckeyes. The only Vanessa butterflies I’ve seen lately are Red Admirals. I saw one battered P. Lady in May and I saw about 5 A. Ladies in May. Every year I usually see quite a few early on and through the whole season. I haven’t seen a single Buckeye were as last year I saw one in Late May. I have always seen quite a few by this time. |

NABA Avoca Butterfly Count
Location: Within a 15-mile diameter circle centered at Muscoda.
This was the 15th annual Avoca NABA Butterfly Count. It includes parts of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway. 4 observers in 2 parties observed with close-focusing binoculars for 12 party-hours. We found 274 butterflies of 23 species. This was one of the 3 years with the lowest diversity. (Presumably drought and recent severe storms played a role.) We found 3 migrants from the South: Common Sootywing (10), Red Admiral (2) and Sleepy Orange (14). We searched diligently for Little Yellow and Leonard's Skipper but could not find any. We saw a Hog-nosed Snake pretending to be a viper. Thanks to counters Fred Dike, Mike Reese, Karl and Dorothy Legler. |

First time at this site. An interesting mix of native and invasive flora. The Orange Sulfurs appear to be larger in size this year |

Mostly sunny, breezy, 81 degrees. The Autumn Joy sedum is attracting many types of bumblebees today; one was very unlucky. Also spotted a Smooth Greensnake (opheodrys vernalis) trying to get into my garage. He didn't stick around long enough for me to get a good photo. |

One of the Cabbage Whites was barely half the size of a regular. It was a very interesting butterfly. Also, the Gray Comma was a summer brood individual and very battered. It appears most of the female Fritillaries are tattered. |

A windy day with temps in the 70s and not much flying, but I did enjoy watching this female bronze copper crawling from one dock to another. Ready to lay some eggs, perhaps. |

Sunny and 80, almost lunchtime. Also a small, yellow spider was trying to blend in while waiting for lunch to come along. |

Sunny and 80, breezy, late morning. The thistle along my driveway was the popular spot today. The bumbles were filling their baskets. |

Monarch migration is really slowing down. I butterflied a lot of the water control structures of the transfer ditches and flowages the most as that's where the majority of butterflies seem to be now. |

Two sightings within a mile of each other. One on purple cone flowers, the other on marsh milkweed. Wings on both appeared very fresh and undamaged.
