Butterfly sightings for June 2022

When I toured the Wild Rose Fish Hatchery pre Covid, they said they had never seen a Karners in their Lupines. They are there now. Many bumblebees also

It became marginally acceptable butterfly weather in our last 1/2 hour of doing bird surveys.

We walked 3 bird/butterfly transects hoping for the start of detectable Purplish Coppers.

Finally, a Viceroy!

This was the first day of seeing multiple Monarchs at this location. Also saw the first Arctic Skippers of the year, one of which was nectaring extensively on violets.

FOY Monarch

66F, sunny breezy 10mph (gusts around 15mph) What a surprise to see a female Reakirt’s blue!! Saw three tiger beetle species; Northern barrens, Boreal long-lipped & Festive.

Very active flier. Observed in area with blooming honeysuckle and nannyberry.

Incidental while removing invasives.

There were at least 12 or 15 of these butterflies today, on several of our dry prairie points. 10 or 12 on one point, and the rest on another point. I'd never seen so many before. Some were chasing each other, circling around and around and up into the air.

Nice to finally see a variety of butterflies! Also saw an osprey on her nest with mate close by, a Great blue heron, and a red-tailed hawk. We were also serenaded by a bull frog. Sunny, breezy, 73 degree early afternoon.

While visiting the International Crane Foundation, I walked through their prairie restorations and took note of a few butterflies.

I spent about two hours wandering around in the woods. Not a lot of nectar sources and the sunny skies started to cloud up during the afternoon.

There were a number of Baltimore Checkerspot caterpillars feeding on honeysuckle and other plants.

Cool...low to high 60's and sunny most of the day. Clouded up before leaving. time: between 8am and 1:00pm. Most prominent Butterflies were the Duskywings. And finally got my Lifer Boreal Long-lipped Tiger Beetle.

Sunny, mid 70s, breezy and late afternoon. Walked our MFL, a mix of oak and pine trees. The wild blackberry bushes along the end of the woods were in full bloom. Couldn't miss these bright orange fresh looking skippers on the berry bushes.

Also saw 8 sulphurs that would not land for ID. In addition, I saw 2 Snowberry Clearwing Moths and an Eight-spotted Forester Moth.

Beautiful day, beautiful spot. Moccasin flowers and Labrador tea at their peak, pitcher plants in bud. A very beat-up Monarch.

This was the most Dusted Skipper that I have seen in one day. Also my favorite bee fly.

Sunny, in the 60s, but very windy. I walked a trail about 2.5 miles and saw only three butterflies. Most of those I saw were on scat along the road, including all four Karners.

Also saw 3 unidentified Sulphur, and what looked like a Red-spotted Purple but it did not land.

Sunny, 73 degrees, wind 10-12 mph with gusts. Noticed various visitors to the yard/garden today. My first sighting of an American Lady.

Sightings along Boghaunter Trail.

Sites included Dike 17, Bauer-Brockway Complex, Stanton Creek Road, and nearby Phlox sites on other roads. We walked about 10 miles of transects at about 18 Phlox Moth monitoring units and 14+ Karner Blue sites. We found only 4 Phlox Moths. Because the Phlox flower phenology was on average close to the usually right phenology for good Phlox Moth detection, this seems like a low Phlox Moth brood so far. 37 of the Karner Blues were males, 5 were females, and 2 we didn't see well enough to tell gender.

Stolte Rd, looking for Karners. Warm partly cloudy light wind. Large numbers of Gorgone Checkerspots and Dusted Skippers. No Karners

Lots of Six-spotted Tiger Beetles today.

Woody wetlands come close to the road. May be good sedge skipper location. Also saw unIDed comma.

Took advantage of an hour of sunshine at noon to look for butterflies. Mostly sunny, breezy, and 72 degrees.

Late afternoon and stormy.

These butterflies were feeding on plants in my lawn and pollinator garden.

Went for a walk in the woods after the rain ended about 6 pm. There were a few peeks of sunshine for about a half hour. Temp was 65 and the wind was calm. Caught a glimpse of this Little Wood Satyr, moving close to the ground.

68 degrees and very cloudy. My first Little Wood-Satyr of the year. A Bell's Vireo and Orchard Oriole singing cheered me up from not seeing many butterflies.

About 16 Karner Blue monitoring sites or patches and 12 Phlox Moth sites. Dike 17, Cemetery Road, Numerous Bauer-Brockway sites, several sites on Castle Mound Road, and Stanton Creek Road. Mostly cloudy to half sun, 65-80 degrees F. All Arctic Skippers were in the forested part of the walking road going west from the parking lot at Dike 17. Karner Blues were 134 males, 50 females, and 7 unknown; this 73% male-female ratio is close to what we usually get when the Jackson County brood is at its peak, but it wouldn't be surprising if Karner counts are still on the increase right now. We saw 125 Karner Blues in 1.1 hours along Stanton Creek Road and its pipeline ROW. Common Ringlets are having a really low year here.

These butterflies were feeding on flowers in the lawn and in my pollinator garden on a sunny warm day with light wind.

We implemented a "No Mow May" policy for the pollinators and had 76 extra milkweed plants pop up in various parts of our yard.

After the rain, the butterflies were extremely lacking.

Surprised to only see one Cabbage White today, as we usually see quite a few flying along the trail this time of year. Sunny, breezy, 70 degree late morning.

Little nectar sources available. The azures seems very fresh and light and I expect they were 'Summer' Spring Azure, but they never landed.

10:44 - 12:00. Many of the butterflies were on the gravel parts of the road, maybe picking up minerals. 2 of the Juvenal's Duskywings were swirling around each other. The Pearl Crescent was chased by a dragonfly.

12:24 - 13:54, 1.29 miles. 2 hairstreaks were fighting in a wooded area but I couldn't ID them

Just one survey lasting less than 20 minutes.

Sites along Wood County Hwy X and in Sandhill Wildlife Area. Long-term Karner Blue monitoring at 4 sites where we have counted 60-64 broods per site, and a new site with 35+ broods. We counted 176 male, 28 female, and 2 unknown gender Karner Blues.

It was too cold and the vegetation too soaked for butterflies during our first 3 grassland bird surveys. The last 4 surveys at sites picked for seeing butterflies began to have butterflies. We had our 5th highest count of Karner Blues in any of the 42 broods we've monitored at one site here, and highest since 2004.

Intermittently sunny. 76 degrees. 11 species. The Silvery Blue was at the end of its road. Luckily we didn't find this 1" beetle (Cotalpa sp.) in our bed. We hope you are lucky too.

A tick infested area. Today I saw more Arctic Skippers and Common Ringlets than I have seen in my whole life up to this point.

Marsh Bluet damselflies and Dot-tailed Whiteface dragonflies have just emerged in large numbers.

Calm, mild day; perfect for butterflies. Monarchs have been laying eggs in the garden, but I haven't seen any Monarchs here yet.

Good crop of silvery checkerspots! The most I've seen at one time.

Saw my first Monarch of the season, but still very few butterflies out and about. Did see one blue butterfly that was too far away to ID. Watched the Osprey adults on their nest. Partly sunny, breezy, 72 degree afternoon.

There was more cloud cover than had been forecast but we still had a fairly productive walk. There was also a skipper that moved too quickly to ID.

Hoping for Bog Fritillaries but the flight is a few days late this year. 50% sun, 73 degrees F. We also saw one unidentified Boloria.

We surveyed 7 bogs and the roadsides of 3 of them. The sky was too cloudy for good results so we skipped 3 of the usual 9 bogs just to get things done and move on to somewhere with sunshine. We also surveyed a bog on the north side of Forest Road 136 that we don't usually survey. We found Frigga Fritillaries on all 4 bogs where they are usually found.

Four patches or units in 2 areas. Good butterfly weather.

Hoping for Bog Fritillaries but the flight is a few days late this year. Sunny, 75 degrees F.

Harris checkerspots were lifers. We were thrilled to see them.

This was a hike led by Rich Henderson on butterflies and flowers. We saw three different sizes of Baltimore Checkerspot caterpillars as well as the adults.

Old RR grade from the North side of the property. Evening, warm, partly sunny, light wind.

Late afternoon, sunny. Very fragrant Miss Kim lilac bush draws in butterflies. Near Driveway. Next to meadow of blooming lupines.

Forecast was mostly cloudy so we drove 1 1/2 hour to an area that was sunny! 76 degrees. 13 species. 8 crescents were not identified to species. Harris' is one of our favorite butterflies! Dorothy heard a Dickcissel.

Walked 1.5 miles of the bike path near both flowing and still water but didn't see any grass skippers. The 2 butterflies I did see were after 11 AM. 9:00 - 11:40, 66 - 77 F, 12 mph SE wind.

Cloudy, 64°, slight breeze. Most activity was north of the third parking area. A few flowers were starting to bloom. Also noted a Xanthotype sp (Crocus Geometer Moth) either X. urticaria or X. sospeta ~ needs dissection for species ID.

Surprise Fiery Skipper!

Hot and sunny and breezy. I walked along the river bank from the boat landing to the east end of the park. Dragonflies are gearing up.

Eating on the deck then on the dogs collar that had just recently gotten rolled in animal poop. Was flitting around for nearly 2 hours.

Hot and windy.

Sunny and 96. Too hot for many butterflies.

Went out looking for Little Wood or N. Cloudywing, but did not see either. Very poor day, I probably went too early to beat the heat. One six spotted Tiger Beetle.

Cloudy, 72 degrees F. 20 minutes. We surveyed the bog (2 Jutta Arctics) and the roadside (all other butterflies found).

Same nine bogs as on May 27. We surveyed the roadsides of 3 sites. Cloudy, 80-95 degrees F. Hoping for Bog Fritillaries but the flight is a few days later than average this year.

2 patches in one area, 21 minutes. 20% sunshine, wind 10-30 mph, 92-93 degrees F. Late afternoon on a hot day. Some butterflies may have been hiding to avoid dessication.
