Distinctive light brown/grayish zebra markings on underwings with two dark eye's on the lower outer angle of the hindwing consistent in size with the markings on the outer margin. The upper eye-spot being slightly larger than the lower. I only saw the upperwings ever so briefly but I believe I saw a bluish purple, possibly a male. The antenna were b/w stripped with pale clubs with a bit of orange. This was my first sighting of this species in Wisconsin. This field is disturbed with this butterfly on Birdsfoot Trefoil. |

Very pleased to see Regals today. All seemed to be female and if they landed it was to head deep into the grass and continue to crawl around. The views at Hogback are outstanding and was so pleased to visit this unique prairie in Southwest Wisconsin. Sunny with a breeze and temps around 70 F. |

Mostly morning finds with the grass still wet but saw the Viceroy later in the afternoon. The Meadow Fritillary and the Pearl Crescents were battling it out for the most until the Meadow Fritillary pulled ahead. Did note that the Pearl Crescent seemed to be more prevalent at both ends of a field and the Meadow Fritillary numbers were higher in the middle. Woods on one end but that didn't seem to make a difference. Sunny with no wind and temps in the upper 70's. |

This butterfly must have been trapped inside of the shed we found it in. It was hanging upside down from the insulation on the ceiling. I was able to get it to cling to my finger in an attempt to get it water and warmth. It had little life left in it. Not sure if it was able to revive itself. |

A few butterflies that I didn't see yesterday at this location. It seems that I seldom see the American Lady so happy to see this one even if it was beat up. I very seldom see butterfly predators when I am out and about but in the last few days I spotted the Meadow Fritillary under attack by three different predators: a bird literally swooped down in front of me and snapped one up, a Garden Spider had one wrapped in his web and today an Ambush Bug had one in it's clutches.

Location: Russel Hill
Started out cloudy and scattered sprinkles in the morning to partly cloudy and at times very windy. I walked the entire length of the East -West ridge starting from the Paul Brant dedication plaque on both sides of the ridge. There were large numbers of Cabbage whites, orange sulphurs, and fewer clouded sulphurs. |

1.75 hours. The Meadow Fritillary here was our 6th kind of fritillary seen today, combined with sightings at Buena Vista WA. This is close to our latest date in the year, or is our latest date, for seeing Variegated, Aphrodite, Great Spangled, and Silver-bordered Fritillaries. Lots of fresh male Purplish Coppers, so this flight could last a while longer: 45 of the Purplish Coppers were along Apache Avenue east of County Hwy W (44 of them on the south side), 5 were along Archer Avenue west of County Hwy W, and one was well south of Archer. |

3 hours. This is our latest date for seeing a Regal Fritillary by four days, and close to or actually our latest Aphrodite Fritillary date. Two female Regals in different plots nectared very near us on different kinds of thistles, then a Regal Fritillary flew right above the 2nd one kept going without us figuring out its gender. The Purplish Coppers were in 4 plots in 3 widely separated areas. The Common Checkered-Skipper was in fresh wing condition and was along Lake Road. |

I knew that it was going to be a good butterfly day so I decided to try Russell Hill where I had a good chance to find two species I have not seen - a Southern Dogface and Little Yellow. The Little Yellow was pretty easy to find but one Southern Dogface cooperated, too. The Common Buckeye is having a good year. I very seldom see more than one a day! The White-lined Sphinx Moth was the fourth one for me to see in the last three days. It was a very long walk from 9:30 - 1:30 with an occasional breeze and temps between 72-80 F. |

We serendipitously ran into Mike Reese and had a great time butterflying together. It was mostly sunny but fairly windy during our 3 hour survey. The Southern Dogfaces were along the trail heading north and the Little Yellows were along the trail heading west. One Common Checkered-Skipper was also on the west trail, and another was nectaring a dandelion right in the parking area! It was difficult to count the Sulphurs and Whites given the large area we surveyed, so these numbers are a conservative estimate. |
