Cyrtopogon lutatius

This is a very small robber fly that inhabits the tops of old fallen logs. I am certain that I saw this species in Jackson County at the Bauer-Brockway Barrens SNA on May 31, but I couldn’t get close enough in the brush to get a better view or a photo. After finding the ones in Sandhill Wildlife Area I realized that what I had made me noticed them was the male with the large, distinctive white mystax.
