Hairy-necked Tiger Beetle

Cicindela hirticollis

inc. hirticollis and rhoden
The first photos that I took of C. hirticollis were the ones taken near Portage, WI. They were atypical of the other specimens of this species that I have seen since. In the field they are reddish and the maculations were very light and contrasted greatly with the background color.

Notes: Cicindela hirticollis hirticollis – Lower Wisconsin River and scattered in Chippewa and Black Rivers; river sandbars; April to September
Cicindela hirticollis rhodensis – apparently intergrades with ssp. hirticollis, not genetically distinct; restricted to beach dunes of Great Lakes; threatened with extirpation; May to September.
